Every cohort passes around the same rumor: "if it shuts off at 70 you passed" โ or failed, depending on who is telling it. Neither is true. The length of your exam is a statement about how quickly the test became confident, not which way.
The mechanism in one paragraph
A computer-adaptive test (CAT) keeps an estimate of your ability. After each answer it updates that estimate and picks the next question from the pool near your current level, while still meeting the blueprint's content targets. Answer correctly and the next item tends to be harder; miss one and it tends to be easier. The exam ends when the test is confident, to a set statistical standard, that your ability is above or below the passing standard โ or when you reach the maximum number of items or the time limit.

The exams also include a number of unscored pilot questions that are being tested for future use. You cannot tell which ones they are, so treat every question as if it counts.
What this means on test day
- The questions will feel hard. That is the design: the test keeps offering items near the edge of your ability. Feeling challenged is not a sign you are failing.
- You cannot skip or go back. Each answer is final, because the next item depends on it. Answer, commit, move on.
- Pace for the maximum. Budget your time as if you will see every question the exam allows.
- Do not count. A short exam and a long one can both be passes.
How to practice for an adaptive exam
Untimed topic quizzes cannot prepare you for a test that moves between domains and difficulty levels.
